Van Hollen Statement on President Obama’s Executive Actions to Reduce Gun Violence
Washington, DC – Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen released the following statement on President Obama’s executive actions to reduce gun violence:
“President Obama’s executive actions on gun safety will protect Maryland communities and help save lives across the country. The overwhelming majority of Americans support expanding federal background checks for gun buyers, but Republicans in Congress beholden to the gun lobby and the NRA have prevented us from even having a vote. I have urged the President to take every possible step to make our communities safer, and Congress must build on this effort to reduce the horrific toll of gun violence in our communities.”
BACKGROUND:
Congressman Van Hollen has long supported expanding federal background checks, closing the gun show loophole, banning assault weapons, preventing those on the terrorist watchlist from purchasing weapons, and other common sense gun safety measures. He has also
introduced legislation to help protect communities from the daily toll of gun violence on our communities.
