Van Hollen Statement on President’s Plan to Close Guantanamo Prison
Washington, DC – Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen released the following statement on the President’s plan for closing the Guantanamo Bay Detention Facility:
“Housing detainees at Guantanamo undermines U.S. national security, costs half a billion dollars a year to maintain, and is an active recruiting tool for terrorist organizations. The President has put forward a clear plan to close the facility, and it deserves fair consideration and swift implementation. His plan deals with the current prisoners in a responsible way that protects our national security and the security of our allies. Keeping the Guantanamo prison open hurts us far more than it helps us, and we must take action to finally close it.”
