Van Hollen Statement on Sixth Anniversary of the Affordable Care Act
Washington, DC – Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen released the following statement marking the sixth anniversary of the date the Affordable Care Act was signed into law:
“Today marks the sixth anniversary of President Obama signing the Affordable Care Act. As a member of the Democratic leadership team, it was an honor to be part of the fight to get this historic legislation passed into law. Today, 20 million previously uninsured Americans have health insurance coverage. In Maryland alone, more than 700,000 people received health coverage through the Maryland Exchange last year.
“But the real impact of the ACA isn’t just about the statistics – it’s about the empowerment felt by women who now have guaranteed access to birth control and other essential health services free of charge, and the relief felt by young Americans who no longer live in fear that one outrageous medical bill could lead to lifelong financial hardship. For seniors, the ACA’s impact is about greater financial freedom thanks to free preventive care and more affordable prescription drugs.
“These vast improvements to health care in our country are under constant assault by some Republicans, who have obsessively voted to repeal the ACA. But the undeniable truth is that the law is working, and it is here to stay. We now must work together to build upon the progress we’ve achieved, and I won’t give up the fight until every single American has the health coverage they deserve.”
