The Washington NFL franchise signed former Philadelphia Eagles receiver DeSean Jackson to a three-year, $24 million deal, including $16 million in guaranteed money, according to ESPN.
“It’s going down!! Burgundy and Gold,” said Jackson, via Twitter, after agreeing to his deal.
Washington immediately reached out to Jackson following his release from the Eagles earlier this week. ESPN reported that Philadelphia was displeased with Jackson’s attitude and demeanor and felt he wasn’t a “good fit” in the culture Eagles second-year head coach Chip Kelly is trying to build. Some reports even alleged that Jackson may be affiliated with a street gang because of the hand gestures that he has made at times while celebrating after plays. Jackson released a statement to the media, disputing such allegations.
“I would like to make it very clear that I am not and never have been part of any gang. I am not a gang member and to speculate and assume that I am involved in such activity off the field is reckless and irresponsible. I work very hard on and off the field and I am a good person with good values,” Jackson stated.
“I am proud of the accomplishments that I have made both on and off the field, ”Jackson continued. “ I have worked tirelessly to give back to my community and have a positive impact on those in need. It is unfortunate that I now have to defend myself and my intentions. These reports are irresponsible and just not true. I look forward to working hard for my new team. God Bless.”
Arguably the fastest man in the NFL, Jackson could bring the kind of explosive play Washington fans haven’t seen in a long time. Jackson put up career-highs last season for Philly, catching 82 passes for more than 1300 yards and nine touchdowns. He’s also an excellent punt return specialist, having returned four punts back for touchdowns throughout his six-year career.
Washington’s franchise quarterback, Robert Griffin III, told ESPN that he’s excited to play with Jackson.
“He’s a very exciting player,” Griffin said. “ determined to show he is the best and hungry to win. My kinda guy.”
