Comptroller Franchot Announces Extension of Monthly Sales Tax Deadline for Baltimore Businesses
-Two Week Extension Granted to Assist Businesses as They Rebuild-
Annapolis, Md. (May 5, 2015) – To assist Baltimore City businesses directly impacted by the recent unrest, Comptroller Peter Franchot today announced a two week extension of the Maryland sales tax deadline for businesses that file monthly. April sales tax returns and payments that were due by May 20, 2015 are now due by June 3, 2015. All Penalties and interest will be waived if returns are filed during the extension period. The vendor discount will apply as long as the returns are filed and the taxes are remitted by June 3, 2015. The extension applies to April sales tax returns. May returns will be due by the regular deadline of June 20, 2015.
“We recognize that the retailers and restaurants that are such a vital part of the community are in need of help as the rebuilding process begins in Baltimore City,” said Comptroller Franchot. “Extending the sales tax deadline will offer some assistance as businesses, which were already facing tough economic times, are now struggling because of a loss in revenues.”
“Maryland retailers truly appreciate the effort by Comptroller Peter Franchot in helping retailers in Baltimore manage the aftermath of last week’s disturbances,” Said Patrick Donoho, President of the Maryland Retailers Association. “By granting them an extension to timely filing their sales taxes, he has provided breathing room to get their stores up and operational. We hope that citizens will shop their neighborhood stores this Memorial Day weekend to give them the economic boast they sorely need.”
“We appreciate the Comptroller recognizing the serious cash flow challenges facing Baltimore City restaurants right now,” said Marshall Weston, President & CEO, Restaurant Association of Maryland. “Extending the deadline for city businesses to remit sales tax is a big help.”
