Malaika Tamu-Cooper, founder of Dreadz N Headz Salon, is placing natural hair, community healing and cultural pride at the center of Black Follicles Matter, an event hosted in partnership with the Baltimore Natural Hair Care Expo at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Baltimore – BWI Airport on June 28.
With the rising concern in the Black community regarding health risks that are often associated with synthetic hair products used for natural haircare this expo aims to not only raise awareness, but provide solutions.

“Our hair is our crown, whether it’s locs, curls, or coils,” Tamu-Cooper said while explaining the importance of this expo. “The Baltimore Natural Hair Care Expo – Black Follicles Matter is about elevating our natural beauty, promoting wellness and providing a safe space to explore and celebrate the powerful connection between hair and identity.”
The Black Follicles Matter includes a wealth of expert information in various areas related to Black hair. Tamu-Cooper has partnered with other experts to create workshops and panels that address natural hair care, wellness and financial literacy. A well-curated vendor marketplace showcasing the newest natural hair care products, styling tools, as well as holistic wellness brands. Live demonstrations will highlight new techniques for natural styling and haircare maintenance. Lastly, this event offers community connection and empowerment for both attendees and contributors.
“This event is a movement,” Tamu-Cooper said, highlighting its significance and the broad reach she anticipates it will command. “We are celebrating our natural beauty, building community and making space for bold conversations about health, wellness and self-love.”
