The body of a Delta State University (DSU) student was found hanging from a tree on the Cleveland, Miss. campus on Sept. 15.
Campus officials and police have confirmed the body as that of DSU student Demartravion (“Trey”) Reed of Grenada, Miss.
“Police and local authorities were immediately notified and are conducting an active investigation,” said DSU president, Dr. Dan Ennis, in a live-streamed press conference. “Our community is deeply saddened by this loss. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends and all those impacted by Trey’s loss.”
During the press conference, which was live streamed on the university’s Meta (Facebook) page, Ennis said he had spoken with the family of the 21-year-old to expressed his heartbreak.
“Counselors and support services are available to students through the O.W. Reily Counseling Center. Faculty and staff resources services are available through human resources,” said Ennis.
Delta State University Chief of Police Michael Peeler also spoke at the news conference.
“At approximately 7:05 a.m. the university police was notified of what appeared to be the body of a Black male hanging from a tree, central campus, near the DSU pickle ball courts,” said Peeler.
Just hours after the discovery, Peeler announced that “at this time there is no evidence of foul play.”
