The Morgan State University Bears took another lopsided loss, falling 58-13 to the Bowling Green State University Falcons Sept. 10 in Bowling Green, Ohio.
It was the second straight week the Bears were blasted on the road following a 42-3 loss to the Towson Tigers in their Sept. 3 season opener.
Morgan State surrendered 572 total yards to Bowling Green and quarterback Matt Schilz, who completed 16 of 23 passes for 258 yards and 5 touchdowns. Bowling Green running back Anthon Samuel also performed well, rushing for 122 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries. Jordan Hopgood contributed 90 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries for the Falcons.
Travis Davidson, who rushed for 89 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries in the loss, led Morgan State.
“The things we set out to do, we didn’t win,” said MSU coach Don Hill-Eley. “But one of things that I saw is that the guys didn’t quit. There’s a lot of good things that we’ll definitely take from the game.”
Among them is discovery of a new starting quarterback, as redshirt freshman Robert Council has now officially surpassed junior Donovan Dickerson for the spot. Council completed 4 of 19 passes for only 32 yards, but also rushed for 51 yards.
“I thought he played real good,” Hill-Eley said. “He’s definitely our starter. He did a good job and we pulled him in the second half just to see what kind of depth we really have with the other two guys. But again, I thought he did a really good job with moving the offense; we just have to do a better job with making the plays. There were too many dropped balls today.”
Morgan State will go for their first win of the season when they travel back to Baltimore to host Robert Morris Sept. 17 at Hughes Stadium.
