A 45-year-old software developer who was initially charged with second degree homicide was indicted by a Duval County, Fla. grand jury on first degree murder charges in the shooting death of Jordan Russell Davis, a 17-year-old Florida teenager following a dispute in a Florida convenience store parking lot over loud music.
Michael Dunn of Satellite Beach, Fla., faces first-degree murder charges, attempted murder and shooting deadly missiles after Dunn, who is White, and the Black occupants of a neighboring vehicle engaged in a heated exchange over loud music that, prosecutors say, resulted in the death of Davis, according to the Florida Times-Union.
Dunn has been in jail since his arrest after the encounter. State Attorney Angela Corey said she will not seek the death penalty.
Dunn claimed he used self-defense in the incident, invoking Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” law. The law has become a hot issue following the February shooting of Trayvon Martin in Sanford, Fla. by George Zimmerman, who has also claimed its protection.
Davis was a student at Samuel W. Wolfson High School, a magnet school in Duval County, Fla. He was buried in his hometown of Marietta, Ga.
