BGE Teams Up with Higher Achievement, Baltimore, to Provide Hands-On Learning Opportunities for 45 Middle School Scholars at BGE’s Learning and Training Center

As part of Higher Achievement’s Summer Academy, scholars will enhance their science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) skills by tackling hands-on electric and natural gas learning exercises, at the instruction and guidance of BGE utility trainees

WHO:         Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE)

45 Scholars from Higher Achievement, Baltimore

WHAT:       BGE has teamed up with Higher Achievement, Baltimore, to provide an opportunity for limited-income middle school students to learn about the skilled labor required to reliably and safely deliver natural gas and electric to BGE’s 1.2 million central Maryland customers. BGE is hosting the event as part of High Achievement, Baltimore’s rigorous Summer Academy, which helps limited-income youth develop strong academic behaviors and skills in middle school to prepare them for high school and beyond. BGE employees will engage with the students during the event, providing them with instruction and guidance as the students use STEM to tackle hands-on electric and natural gas learning exercises.

BGE volunteers will guide students through the following hands-on learning stations:

  • Building electric circuits and generators
  • “Boom Box” – a gas leak detection demonstration and an explanation of the dangers of a gaseous atmosphere
  • Hula Hoop Station – a creative demonstration of the mechanical skills BGE utility trainees master throughout their training.
  • Damage prevention demonstrations
  • Dress like a Utility Worker
  • Hazard Awareness demonstration around and near BGE bucket trucks and overhead wires

This event aims to create an opportunity to develop a multi-year relationship between the BGE utility trainees and the students as they progress through the Higher Achievement program and hone their academic skills.
