(Updated 9/19/2014) The National Association of Colored Women’s Clubs will commemorate the September 22, 1862 anniversary of President Lincoln’s preliminary proclamation that he would on January 1, 1863 order the emancipation of all slaves located in the confederate states that failed to rejoin the Union.
The proclamation commemoration will occur on Sept. 22 at 2 p.m. at the U.S. Navy Memorial located at 701 Pennsylvania Ave, Northwest D.C.
The organization, founded in 1896, sponsors this annual event to connect people across racial lines to acknowledge the sacrifices that have been made to ensure that all people are free, not only from slavery but terrorism around the world.
