Albert “Al” Joyner, the brother of national radio personality and host of the “Tom Joyner Morning Show” Tom Joyner, passed away June 3, after being hospitalized for about a month due to an undisclosed illness.

Joyner, 69, is described as a successful local business owner who owned several McDonald’s franchises under his My Joy, Inc. and a philanthropist in Jackson, Miss.

Upon the passing of Joyner, his brother Tom Joyner tweeted, “My brother Albert passed away this morning. Great husband, father and brother. We’ll miss him.”

Joyner was a former board member of the Jackson State University (JSU) Development Foundation.

In a statement issued by JSU President Carolyn W. Meyers, cited by the Jackson Free Press, Meyer said, “His presence will continue to be missed. He provided us with a strong model of community engagement and service. His character is a shining example we should all seek to emulate.”

The late Joyner provided financial support to the university’s band as well as to student athletes, according to Fox 5 News.

Joyner left behind wife, Danita, and four children, Michael, Albert Jr., Allison and Danielle.

Joyner’s funeral is expected to take place at Anderson United Methodist Church, June 8.
