The Rev. Anthony McCarthy, a well-known media presence in Baltimore, will be remembered at a memorial service on April 27. The celebration of life will be held at the Northwood Appold United Methodist Church on the 4400 block of Loch Raven Blvd. in Baltimore, beginning at 2 p.m.
The 57-year-old died March 16 after an extended battle with kidney disease.
McCarthy was a fixture in the Baltimore media and political spheres for more than three decades. He served a stint as editor-in-chief of the Baltimore Afro-American Newspaper, then hosted the award-winning program “The Anthony McCarthy Show” on WEAA 88.9 FM for several years. He subsequently hosted “The Weekly News Roundup” on WYPR 88.1 FM.
In addition to reporting the news, Anthony also made frequent appearances in the news as spokesman or communications director for several politicians, including former Baltimore mayors Sheila Dixon, Stephanie Rawlings-Blake and Catherine Pugh; the late Congressman Elijah Cummings (D-Md.); current Rep. Kweisi Mfume (D-Md.) and other government entities; and served as a political strategist for several political candidates.
The ordained minister lived out his faith via community service, serving on the boards of the Public Justice Center of Maryland, the Baltimore City NAACP, the Maryland Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Union Memorial Hospital and Tears of a Mother’s Cry.
