“Queen of Soul” Aretha Franklin may be related to Oscar-winning actress Halle Berry, according to a press release from her publicist.
According to EURWeb.com, a family member told Franklin, 70, that her grandmother and Halle's grandmother were first cousins. The singer is currently investigating the claim.
Last year, Franklin announced that Berry will portray her in an upcoming film based on her life. But during a 2011 interview with E! News, Berry said she would be the wrong choice for the role because of her weak vocal ability.
Despite Berry's rejection of the role, Franklin recently said in an interview with Glamour magazine that the actress is still being considered, alongside Jennifer Hudson and Audra McDonald. The project will be directed by Taylor Hackford, who produced and directed “Ray” and “Dream Girls.”
The film, which will be based on the singer’s 1999 autobiography “Aretha: From These Roots,” has been at a standstill for quite some time. But now, the singer says the biopic is on its way.
“We are fine-tuning the treatment now,” Franklin told Glamour. “The treatment has four acts. [Hackford] has finished all four. We’re now reworking some of it where it needs work. Each name that I put out there, he likes. The names he puts out there, I like. We have a happy medium.”
