Association for the Study of African American Life and History elected the new national president who was honored by President Obama with the 2014 National Humanities Medal for illuminating the African-American journey.

Evelyn Brooks Higginbotham, the Victor S. Thomas Professor of History and of African and American Studies at Harvard University was announced as the 28th president on Nov. 10.

Author of Righteous Discontent: The Women’s Movement in the Black Baptist Church: 1880-1920, Higginbotham received the 2014 National Humanities Medal for her work in African American Studies by President Obama.

Other elected officials for ASALH is Greer Stanford-Randle, national vice president for membership,  Jim C Harper II, vice president for programs, Karsonya Wise Whitehead, selected panelist for the White House’s Black History Month and Gilbert A. Smith, national treasurer.
