Though the competition surrounds BayStreet Lounge, it has stayed relevant for over 20 years. When the Capital Beltway had limited party spots for Prince George’s County residents, Leonard “Smitty” Smith, in 1994, created an entertainment space in Lanham, Md.

The establishment’s reputation speaks for itself, says Smith who has remained the manager from its beginning. He is now serving second generations at his lounge. He said his success stems from the establishment’s friendly customer service, large space, and tight security.

“Not many spots in our county stay open until 3 a.m. and BayStreet offers the after party. When we want to continue partying and we are not ready to go home, we go to BayStreet,” party-goer Courtney Morgan told the AFRO. “BayStreet is closer to home and we did not want to travel to D.C.”

BayStreet is located inside of the Best Western Hotel on Princess Garden Parkway in Lanham, Md. With two dance floors, DJ’s and free admission before 8 p.m., the establishment provides space and opportunity to meet and greet other residents.

“Our security is tight” Smith told the AFRO. “We are at a 11 on a scale of 1-10. We check everybody down to their pockets and purses.”
