The Morgan State University (MSU) Bears men’s basketball team earned its third win of the season and first victory against a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) team as they beat South Carolina State University (SCSU) 73-68, in a MEAC opener on Jan. 7 at the SHM Memorial Center in Orangeburg, S.C.

Bears senior forward Ameer Ali scored 19 points to lead four MSU players with double-digits in points in the win over their conference foe. Ali had just scored a career-high 21 points against San Francisco in the previous game before S.C. State.

Bears senior center Kevin Thompson followed Ali with 17 points against SCSU, while junior forward DeWayne Jackson scored 14 points. Sophomore center Ian Chiles added 10 points to MSU’s total.

The Bears shot well from the field as a team, making 41 percent of its shots in the game, but was outrebounded 51-35 by S.C. State. Senior guard Brandon Riley led SCSU with a game-high 26 points in the loss.

MSU’s win ended a two-game losing streak, marking the fourth consecutive victory for Morgan over SCSU. Todd Bozeman improved his record to 10-2 against SCSU throughout his six-season career as head coach of the Bears.

Morgan State (3-10 overall, 1-0 MEAC) will see more MEAC action in a matchup against Savannah State on Jan. 9 in Savannah, Ga.
