Howard University men’s basketball team ended a two-game losing streak on Feb. 19, with a surprising home victory against a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) cohort with a far better record than the Bison.
Howard (6-20 overall, 4-9 MEAC) is second from last in the MEAC and usually struggles against better ranked conference opponents, but they managed to shock Florida A&M (11-16 overall, 6-7 MEAC) with a 59-50 victory Saturday at Burr Gymnasium in Washington, D.C.
Howard leaned on sophomore forward Dadrian Collins, who scored a team-high 13 points on 3-of-5 field goals and 5-of-8 shots made from the free-throw line. Collins was followed by sophomore guard Anton Dickerson, who put up 11 points. The rest of the team contributed to balanced scoring. Sophomore forwards Mike Phillips, Kyle Riley and Gary Lawrence scored eight scored points each.
Florida A&Mโs Amin Stevens scored a game-high 22 points, along with a game-high 11 rebounds. But no one else on the squad scored more than five points, and the team struggled offensively in the second half, making only 21 percent of their shots.
Howard will attempt to win two straight games for the first time this season when they face Bethune-Cookman (15-11 overall, 9-3 MEAC) on Feb. 21 at 8 p.m. at Burr Gymnasium.
