LisaRaye McCoy and film and television star Mehki Phifer will co-host the NAACP’s 20th celebration of thespians of color, 7 p.m. Aug. 30 at the Director’s Guild of America in Los Angeles.
Under the auspices of the NAACP Beverly Hills/ Hollywood Branch, the Annual NAACP Theatre Awards will, this year, honor director and producer Kenny Leon (Aida, Fences and Raisin in the Sun) for the Trailblazer Award; Wren T. Brown (Star Trek: The Next Generation) for the Community Service Award and Quadiru Kent on behalf of Wal-Mart for the President’s Award.
Capitol Records R&B recording artist Bobby V. will give a special performance. But, it will be one of many special moments during the weekend’s festivities. The awards show will be ushered in by the Third Annual NAACP Theatre Festival, which runs Aug. 27-29 at the New LATC in Los Angeles.
The Festival begins with a VIP reception and showcases several theatrical performances such as Layon Gray’s Black Angels Over Tuskegee; Transitions, a trio of one-act plays and PHI’LA The Musical, a real-life high school musical that was recognized by L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.
Attendees will also be treated to a daily segment entitled “the 10-minute play” which will highlight local theatre playwrights, producers and actors; and an interview-panel with acclaimed actor Ruben Santiago-Hudson (ABC’s Castle).
