Bowie State saw seventeen student-athletes graduate and receive bachelor degrees in the 2011 Winter Commencement held on Dec. 16 at the A. C. Jordan Arena in Bowie, Md.

Bowie State’s newest alum now includes former star football player Tariq Jones, a 5-foot-9-inch, 198-pound running back out of Baltimore, Md. that led the Bulldogs in rushing numerous years. Jones majored in computer technology, but had career goals of becoming a social worker. Other student athletes turned graduates include Lakisha Walker (women’s basketball), Arthur Bowers (men’s basketball), Franklin Robinson (men’s track) and Christina Rowles (women’s track), among others.

“I feel accomplished and an overwhelming sense of freedom,” Rowles told the AFRO. “My plan is to continue studying for my doctorate in physical therapy.”

“I would like to personally congratulate all of our graduating student-athletes that participated in the December 2011 ceremony. We celebrate many victories in the athletic department, but none more important than when we see our student-athletes walk across the stage,” Bowie State Athletic Director Anton Goff said. “I know that our coaches and staff are just as proud of them as I am. The work that goes into being a student-athlete can never be underestimated. We wish all of our graduates the best as they transition into the next phase of their life.”
