After an excellent 3-0 start to the season, the Bowie State Bulldogs have now lost two straight games, including a 28-21 loss in overtime to the Virginia State University (VSU) Trojans on Oct. 1 in Ettrick, VA. The Bulldogs had nevertheless been competitive in a tightly contested game that was tied at 21 after four quarters.

But Bowie State couldn’t stop the Trojans from running the ball in the overtime period, as VSU ran three straight times before finding the end zone for the 28-21 lead. The Bulldogs could have forced another overtime period with their own touchdown, but were stopped on all four downs to end the game.

VSU quarterback Jared Battle tossed three interceptions to Bowie State’s defense, but also scored three times for the Trojans, including two short touchdown runs and a 22-yard touchdown pass to receiver Timothy Paulk. Battle scored the game-winning touchdown on a 1-yard run on the first drive of overtime. Trojans running back Tyler Wilson led all rushers with 68 yards on 27 carries.

BSU senior reserve quarterback Andre Johnson came off the bench to complete 8 of 17 passes for 117 yards, replacing injured senior Clifton Budd, who completed just 4-of-9 passes for 52 yards before being sidelined. Bulldogs running backs Tariq Jones and Keith Brown each rushed for 64 yards and a touchdown. Bulldogs senior linebacker Delano Johnson led the game with a career-high 14 tackles despite the loss.

Bowie State (3-2 overall) will now have a short week to prepare for a road game against non-conference opponent Fairmont State University of West Virginia on Oct. 8.
