Cardin Statement on the Fourth of July
BALTIMORE – U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.) released the following statement in celebration of Independence Day on Saturday, July 4:
“Under thick glass in the National Archives in Washington, DC, sits the Declaration of Independence. Two hundred and thirty-nine years ago, the Founding Fathers of this great nation used that document to announce to Great Britain and the entire world that we, the United States of America, would embark upon a profoundly radical experiment in self-governance and democracy. In the intervening years, America and the Declaration of Independence have inspired men and women across the world to strive towards an existence in which ‘certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness’ are the cornerstone of society.
“The road from the signing of the Declaration of Independence to today has been long and fraught with struggle. Americans from every walk of life, on foreign battle fields and on picket lines have sacrificed together to make us what we are today. While the struggle are ongoing, every Fourth of July, we as Americans, gather together to celebrate how far we have come and to recommit ourselves to our founding principles. This Fourth of July, we must remember that the ideals on which we have built the greatest nation the world has ever seen are the most powerful ideals the world has ever known. The idea that ‘all men – and women – are created equal’ still moves people to believe that they truly can have something. We are the international benchmark of success and progress, all that we have achieved, we have achieved together.
“On the Fourth of July and every day we must remember that our differences remain strengths of character and sources pride, but we are one Nation. Our continued success depends greatly upon our ability to defend and advance the highest principles of our founding, together.”
