A clown entertaining fairgoers at a Memphis event was fired for racial comments he made toward an attendee.

According to Memphis NBC affiliate WMC, Tanya Jones of Atoka, Tenn. was visiting the Memphis Delta Fair with her three young children and extended family over the Labor Day weekend when they passed a dunk tank with a White clown attempting to entice passerby to play at the booth. While on the microphone, the unnamed clown said “Hey, nappy head.”

Jones and her family eventually realized the clown was talking to her, as he continued his remarks. Jones’ brother Mario Curry told the television station that the clown followed up by saying, “Yeah, I’m talking to you, Sheneneh. You look unbeweavable.”

“You’ve got a cheap weave,” he allegedly added. “You must have gotten it from the Dollar Tree store.”

The clown was fired from the company which operates the booth. Mark Lovell, president of the fair, told WMC that he was embarrassed by the man’s comments.

“We try to promote the Delta Fair as clean, safe, and family friendly,” he said. “We try to keep the comments funny but without sexual connotation and without racial connotations.”
