The Lady Bison women’s basketball team finished with one of its best seasons in school history last season. And according to head coach Niki Reid Geckeler, their success was the result of hard work from her players and coaching staff.
That’s why Geckeler promoted assistant coach Jimmy Howard to the role of associate head coach, as announced by HU Sports Information on April 26.
“Jimmy has proven to be an invaluable contributor to the program,” Geckeler said. “This promotion is to reward the hard work, dedication and effort Jimmy has put into the program as we continue to move in a positive direction.”
With Jimmy Howard on the staff last season, the Lady Bison played very well, placing fourth in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, the highest finish for Howard since the 2004-05 season.
HU also ranked No. 1 in the MEAC with 16.1 offensive rebounds per game and No. 3 in scoring defense, allowing only 59.0 points per game.
Coach Howard is also responsible for national and international recruiting, player development and serving as the post and wing coach. He was instrumental in bringing in a highly decorated recruiting class in 2008-09, which includes star red-shirt freshman Saadia Doyle.
“It is truly an honor to be promoted to the position of associate head coach at a school with such a tremendous basketball history as Howard University,” Howard said. “We are extremely excited about what we have been able to accomplish these past two seasons and are thrilled with the prospects for the future.”
