WHAT:          Comptroller Franchot will join local fair board members and elected leaders in a stroll Thursday evening at the 91st annual Charles County Fair, located just south of La Plata. The 35-acre fairground includes exhibits of livestock, field corn, arts and crafts, quilts and flowers shown in the Greens area. Four stages will be filled with games, shows, live music, a baby show, pig races, pony rides, performers and lawnmower racing. The carnival midway offers rides for young and old alike and fair goers can feast on traditional county fair food, healthy alternatives and crab cakes.

Incorporated in 1924, the fair board purchased the current Spring Hill property in 1925. The only building on the grounds at that time was a small tobacco barn near today’s entrance. Over the years, the fair property has grown and now features a farm museum, a one-room school house, two commercial buildings and several exhibit buildings for livestock, poultry and storage. Charlie Gardiner is fair board president.
