Prince George’s County, Md. police are investigating a police-involved shooting that occurred June 22.

The suspect in the incident was identified as 22-year-old Ivanilov Tembi Fomukong of the 5200 block of Tilden Road in Bladensburg.

According to police the following facts occurred :

  • On June 22 at 11:48 p.m. Fomukong approached a patrol officer who was parked in his marked cruiser in the 5400 block of Annapolis Road.  Once Fomukong got to the car, he knocked on the officer’s window, intending for him to roll it down. The officer, identified as 16-year veteran Sergeant Milton Chabla, partially rolled his window down.
  • Fomukong was speaking incomprehensibly and spat on Chabla’s cruiser. Chabla then exited the cruiser to address Fomukong, but saw that he was armed with a butcher knife.
  • Chabla called for back-up to the scene, and a responding officer deployed a Taser that had no effect on Fomukong. In fear for the safety of himself and other officers at the scene, Chabla discharged his service weapon and struck Fomukong in the leg.

Fomukong was taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries. He faces three counts of first-degree assault and second-degree assault.

Chabla is on routine administrative leave pending an investigation.
