WASHINGTON, DC – At-Large Councilmember Sekou Biddle was named “Education Reformer of the Month” by Democrats for Education Reform for the month of March.
In a statement, representatives from Democrats for Education Reform said “The newest member of the D.C. Council, Sekou has demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to providing an excellent education for every child. Sekou will help to ensure that the D.C. Public School system stays under mayoral control and thrives under the progressive leadership of Chancellor Kaya Henderson.”
Sekou, who is chair of the Council’s Special Committee on School Safety and Truancy, said he was “honored to have the support of my fellow Democrats from around the country.
”He added, “We believe in the power of change and that we can provide high-quality schools for all students in the District.”
Biddle has 18 years of experience in urban education reform, including eight years as a classroom teacher. As executive director for Jumpstart for Young Children, he partnered with trained adults in year- long relationships with preschool-aged children to prepare them for success in school and was elected to D.C. Board of Education in the spring of 2007.
Sekou previously served as the director of community outreach for KIPP DC, which operates three middle schools in the District of Columbia. Prior to this, he trained and supported first- and second- year teachers as a program director with Teach for America, the national teacher corps.
A District native, Biddle holds a bachelor’s in business from Morehouse College and a master’s in early childhood education from Georgia State University with a focus on urban education.
