Radio personality Steve Harvey hosted his ninth annual Hoodie Awards at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas on Aug. 13. Each year, the awards ceremony sets out to honor local businesses, schools, religious establishments and community leaders across the country. This year, a handful of residents from the D.C. area took home awards.

Listeners of Howard University’s WHUR 96.3 FM voted in record numbers and helped area nominees win seven of the 12 categories. They were nominated online and voted on by the 6 million listeners on the nationally syndicated “Steve Harvey Morning Show.”

These winners earned the “Best” title in the following categories:

Fried Chicken – Carey’s Cuisine in Forestville, MD.
High School Teacher – Glendora Franklin from Friendship Collegiate Academy in D.C.
Nail Salon – Salon Couture in Forestville, MD.
Hair Salon – Salon Couture in Forestville, MD.
Barbershop – Moons Barbershop in Annapolis, MD.
Church – First Baptist Church of Glenarden in Upper Marlboro, MD.
Community Leader – Tony Lewis, Jr., CEO of Sons of Life in D.C.

“We are so very proud of the winners and all of our nominees,” WHUR General Manager Jim Watkins said in a statement. “WHUR has always known that the Washington region has the very best in business and community outreach. Now the rest of the country knows too.”

Every winner took home the coveted Hoodie Award. Salon Couture additionally received a $1,000 salon makeover and Tony Lewis received a brand new 2011 Ford Explorer.
