District-based child care provider Melbert Johnson is one of 17 providers nationally recognized for their commitment and dedication to providing outstanding quality child care at the Third Annual National Child Care Providers Awards Ceremony held recently on Capitol Hill.
The ceremony, presented by public TV stations KCET (Los Angeles), WETA (Washington, D.C.) and the award-winning PBS informational series “A Place of Our Own” and “Los Niños en Su Casa,” recognized the important role child care providers play in raising pre-school age children and preparing them for kindergarten. Members of Congress, including Congressman Harry Teague (D-N.M.), Congresswoman Linda Sanchez (D-Calif.) and Congressman Jim McDermott (D-Wash.) from the recipients’ home districts participated in the event.
Johnson has dedicated over 40 years of her life to caring for the children and families of Washington, D.C. Her specialty has been creating a calm and reassuring environment for children of military families. Johnson offers child care 23 hours a day, making it convenient for parents to work their required shifts, without worrying about their children’s safety.
Al Jerome, KCET president and CEO, said Johnson and the 16 other awardees should be honored for their commitment to children’s education. “We are very pleased to honor these outstanding child care providers who have dedicated their life’s work to teaching and providing quality care to young children,” said Jerome in a statement. ““We are proud of these special people who play such an important role in children’s lives and pleased that ‘A Place of Our Own’ and ‘Los Ninos en Su Casa’ can support them in this important responsibility of helping to prepare young children to succeed in school.”
