“Danielle has honed her leadership skills as she has risen up the ranks at Johns Hopkins Bayview over the past 23 years,” Nickoles wrote. “In her new position as COO, Danielle will add oversight of a number of clinical operations to her current areas of responsibility, including emergency medicine, Department of Medicine, neurosciences, gyn/ob, pediatrics, orthopaedics, oncology, psychiatry, ambulatory services and information services.”

Wharton began her career at Johns Hopkins Bayview as an administrative resident in 2002. She has served as the vice president of clinical and support services since 2020. In this role, Wharton has led efforts to modernize the campus infrastructure, including the replacement of the laboratory analyzers and pharmacy carousel, as well as the multi-year elevator modernization. She has also been a driving force behind many of the health system integration efforts, including working with the corporate supply chain team to implement the Wavemark supply capture system.

After completing her residency, Wharton served as the assistant administrator and director of operations in the Johns Hopkins Bayview Care Center (now the John R. Burton Pavilion). In 2008, she was named director of support services for the Medical Center. She was promoted to senior director in 2012, and to vice president of support services in 2017. With each promotion, Wharton has taken on increasing responsibilities, until her areas of oversight included clinical administrators, emergency management, clinical nutrition, imaging, pathology/clinical lab, rehab medicine, clinical engineering, environmental care services, facilities, food services, parking, transportation, patient transport, public safety and supply chain.

Wharton, who first came to Johns Hopkins Bayview as a learner, has a passion for mentorship both in and outside of work, seeing it as an opportunity to positively impact the future of health care. She has served as an advisor to the administrative fellows and as a member of the JHM Administrative Fellowship Advisory Committee. Many current Johns Hopkins Bayview managers and directors consider her a mentor, whether formally or informally. Wharton also completed the Carol Emmott Foundation Fellowship in February. This 18-month cohort consisted of female health care executives from across the nation. As part of her fellowship, Wharton led a community-based project to support the workforce development through a partnership with Dundalk High School that creates a talent pipeline for several of the ancillary and support services.

Wharton received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from George Washington University. She serves as a member-at-large of the National Association of Health Services Executives, as well as a board member for the Baltimore School for the Arts and the Empowerment Temple AME Church. She is also an executive champion for the United Way campaign at Johns Hopkins.
