DC Greenworks, a local environmental nonprofit, recently teamed with the Living City DC 14th & U organization and the Summer Youth Employment Program and will install 15 raised beds on the grounds of Paul Laurence Dunbar Apartments to create a community garden.
The event will commence on July 30 and bring together Dunbar Apartment resident volunteers and SYEP participants. DC Greenwork officials say the garden will create a welcoming space for residents and the community to meet and will give Dunbar Apartment residents access to fresh flowers and produce. The new gardens are designed to allow residents to sit, rather than bending down.
“We are thrilled to be helping transform this underused space into one that will be more welcoming to people and more environmentally friendly,” Peter Ensign, executive director of DC Greenworks, said in a statement. “Here we have the opportunity to work with so many volunteers who will help create the space they themselves will be able to enjoy from now on.”
