Thirteen years ago, Shawn Berry, John William King and Russell Brewer – all young, White men- viciously beat 49-year-old James Byrd Jr., an African-American Texas man, as he walked home. Making the ordeal even more gruesome, the three younger men tied Byrd to a pick-up truck and dragged his body for two miles before some of his limbs and head became decapitated.
Brewer and King were sentenced to death and Berry is eligible for parole in 2038.
