Dorothy Mae Lee was born Feb. 19, 1928 to the late Thomas A. and Fannie Rebecca Norris Lee in Anderson, S.C. She departed this life on Dec. 6, 2012.

She was the sixth sibling and the third daughter from this union. Five siblings preceded her in death (Bertha, Hattie, Willie, Hubert and Daniel). Dorothy was a member of Pennsylvania Avenue AME Zion Church, along with her brother, Thomas H. Lee. For 28 years, she was employed at Rosewood State Hospital, retiring as a licensed practical nurse. Before her death, Dorothy wrote the following:

“Those who knew me knew how I lived my life. There is no need to elaborate on my accomplishments, successes or failures. Suffice to say that I tried to walk to the drumbeat of the Master Drummer, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I lived, now I have died, my mission is over. Whatever the Lord had planned for me to do, I hope I was able to do it in a way that was pleasing to him. May you who remain use every minute of each day wisely and well. The bell will toll for thee. Prepare now, for the ticking of your clock may be silenced at any moment. Think rationally and purely. Act bravely, fairly and put truth first. Follow this recipe and I will see you in the morning.

I was married to the late Lemuel Lee for 47 years and from this union three children were born, Donald Tony Lee (deceased), Roxanne Lee-McLaughlin and Barry Maurice Lee. I leave to cherish one devoted brother, Thomas Lee, my caring children, Rosanne and Maurice, my precious grandchildren, Joey, Chris and Tony, my wonderful son-in-law Michael McLaughlin, my lovely great grandchildren, Peyton and Aija, a special nephew, Aviala Lee, who I helped raise from the age of seven, my sisters-in-law, Viola Cain of Jamaica, New York, Rosa Lee of Anderson, S.C., Josephine Lee of Baltimore, Md., Mary and Wilma Lee of Norway, S.C., my brother-in-law, Landy Lee of Norway, S.C., a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends, former coworkers from Rosewood, friends from the grandparents club at Pimlico Elementary/Middle School, members of the Zeta Modeling Events, and a special former daughter-in-law, Debbie Lee.”
