The Rev. Dr. Delores B. Dorsey died quietly and peacefully at Sinai Hospital on Feb. 8, family members said. A woman of unwavering faith, profound wisdom and historic distinction, Dr. Dorsey lived a life anchored in service, scholarship and spiritual purpose.

Born and raised in Baltimore, she was a proud product of the Baltimore City Public School System (BCPSS) and a graduate of Frederick Douglass Senior High School. She continued her academic journey at Coppin State College, earning her undergraduate degree, followed by a masterโ€™s degree from Morgan State University, with additional studies at Towson State University.

Dorsey devoted decades of her life to educating young children as a kindergarten teacher in BCPSS. Her retirement was celebrated throughout the community and highlighted in the Baltimore Afro-American Newspaper, a testament to her impact as a beloved educator.

Rev. Dorseyโ€™s early spiritual growth began at Perkins Square Baptist Church under the pastorate of the late Rev. Ward D. Yerby. It was there that she accepted Christ as her savior and was baptized, setting the foundation for a lifetime of devotion to Godโ€™s work.

Her spiritual walk was guided by her favorite scripture, Psalm 91:1: โ€œHe that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.โ€ This verse shaped her faith, her ministry and her steadfast trust in Godโ€™s covering presence.

Her love for learning and the Word of God led her to the Baltimore School of the Bible, Arlington Baptist Church, and ultimately The Family Bible Institute College and Seminary, where she earned both her masterโ€™s (1993) and doctorate (1995) in theology and ministry.

On Sept. 25, 1994, she made history as the first woman ordained to the gospel ministry at Wayland Baptist Church, breaking an 86โ€‘year tradition and ushering in a new era of inclusion and spiritual leadership. Her ordination, conducted under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Hoffman F. Brown II, remains a defining milestone in the churchโ€™s 118 year history.

Following her ordination, she became a foundational member of the Wayland Clergy Council, contributing to the spiritual and administrative oversight of the congregation. Her ministry focused on pastoral care, spiritual counseling and mentoring emerging women in ministry. She championed the integration of women into formal ecclesiastical leadership and worked tirelessly to strengthen community-based spiritual growth.

Dr. Dorsey was also active in professional and civic organizations, including Phi Delta Kappa (PDK), the International Honorary Organization for Women Educators, where she was honored for excellence and leadership. She was celebrated among Baltimoreโ€™s โ€œRemarkable Women,โ€ recognized for her dual legacy as a spiritual leader and career educator.

Rev. Dorsey truly loved her family deeply and remained a steady source of encouragement and support for her brothers and sisters throughout their lives. She is preceded in death by her parents, Ethel Bernard and Ernest Bernard Sr., and her siblings Vernice Ellison, Bertha Thompson, Ernest Bernard Jr., Alonzo Bernard and Wilbert Bernard.

She leaves to cherish her memory a host of family, friends and members of her church community, all of whom will continue to honor her memory and the impact that she made. Preceding her death, she extended her deepest gratitude to those who supported her, both near and far. She was especially thankful for her devoted cousins Dr. Alicia B. Harvey-Smith, Major Donald W. Smith and Carlisle C. Harvey Sr.; friend Jackie McCray; and her devoted home-care team, whose consistent care and compassion brought her comfort and dignity.

As part of Rev. Dorseyโ€™s homegoing, a viewing will be hosted 4-7 p.m. on Feb. 25 at Vaughn Greene Funeral Services at 8728 Liberty Road, in Randallstown.

Funeral services will be held on Feb. 26, beginning at 10:30 a.m. with a wake and the service at 11 at the Wayland Baptist Church, located at 3200 Garrison Blvd. in Baltimore.

Rev. Dorsey will be interred at Kings Memorial Cemetery, located at 8710 Dogwood Road in Baltimore.
