
Dr. A. Eugene Washington
Dr. A. Eugene Washington, 64, has been appointed chancellor for health affairs at Duke University, as well as president and CEO of the University’s Health System, the university recently announced.
Dr. Washington will assume his duties at Duke effective April 1. He is currently serving as the Dean of the David Geffen School of Medicine, vice chancellor for health sciences and CEO of the University of California, Los Angeles Health System.
At UCLA, Dr. Washington is also a distinguished professor of gynecology and health policy.
“Gene Washington has a track record of outstanding leadership in every aspect of the work of an academic medical center, research, education and patient care,” Duke University President Richard H. Brodhead said in a statement. “A gifted communicator, he has special skills at getting people to work together in support of the larger mission. He has been at the forefront of the national effort to make patient outcomes the focus of health care. And he is a champion of community health who will bring that commitment to Durham. I’m delighted to have him join the Duke team.”
Prior joining the staff of UCLA in 2010, Dr. Washington was executive vice chancellor and provost at the University of California, San Francisco. Earlier in his career, he worked at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.
Dr. Washington received his undergraduate degree at Howard University in Washington, D.C. He earned his master’s degree from the Harvard School of Public Health, a master of public health degree from the University of California, Berkeley, and his doctorate from the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine.
