The Dunbar Poets took a step closer to earning their second straight Maryland State football championship after routing the Surrattsville Hornets of Clinton, Md., 50-6, on Nov. 19 at Poly Western High School field in Baltimore, Md. With the win, the Poets claimed their second consecutive 1A South Regional title.

Dunbar sealed the win early, leaping out to a 22-6 lead by the midway point of the second quarter and leading 36-6 at halftime. Surrattsville’s lone score came near the end of the first quarter on a short touchdown run by Shaquille Jackson.

But the Hornets wouldn’t get near the end zone for the rest of the game, as Poets quarterback William Crest went on a scoring frenzy, tossing four touchdown passes including two to senior receiver Deontay McManus. Dunbar also made several big plays on defense, including three key interceptions made by Ryan Crowder, Terrance Williams and Wilbur Young. Williams’ interception was returned back 35 yards for a defensive touchdown.

“We’re getting closer to our goal of winning the state championship. But I’m going to say what I’ve always said all along,” Dunbar coach Lawrence Smith said after the game. “When somebody says they want it, they say that until we step on the field. Then we show them who really wants it more. Let’s keep showing them.”

Dunbar (9-2) advanced on to the Maryland State Semifinals, scheduled for Nov. 25; their opponent has yet to be determined.
