Fairfax County police officials on May 4 charged two Alexandria, Va., preschool employees with misdemeanor assault and battery of a 4-year-old female student.

Lisa Campbell, 38, a teacher, and Cherie Evette Diggs, 40, a teacher’s assistant at James L. and Juliette McNeil Preschool Academy have been charged in the case.

On April 21, police authorities at Franconia/Springfield Inova Healthplex, an Alexandria emergency room facility, were notified by the child’s mother of bruises on her daughter’ arm. The parent said she believed the injuries were sustained earlier in the day at the school, located at 8543 Forest Place.

Child Protective Services was notified and assisted in the investigation.

“It’s disheartening that you bring your kids here thinking that they are going to be looked after while you are at work and to see that – it’s disheartening,” Dan Claxton, a grandparent of two children at the preschool, told WTTG-TV, the Fox affiliate in Washington, D.C..

According to police, Diggs turned herself in to police on May 3, and Campbell surrendered on May 4.

The Associated Press reported May 5 that it is not clear if both suspects have attorneys.
