A former FBI agent was sentenced Jan. 4 to 18 months in prison for a 2011 drunken-driving crash that left an 18-year-old man dead.
Adrian Johnson, 39, of Brandywine, Md. was convicted in October of motor vehicle manslaughter and six related charges, according to the Washington Post. He was jailed immediately after sentencing and will receive 71 days of credit for the time he has served. He was sentenced in Upper Marlboro.
Authorities told the Associated Press that Johnson was intoxicated and speeding when he crashed his car into another vehicle in Brandywine on Feb. 7, 2011. The crash killed Lawrence Garner Jr. and seriously injured Garnerโs friend, Robert Mitchell II as they were returning home from playing basketball.
Johnsonโs defense attorney, Robert Bonsib argued that the crash was unavoidable. He also vowed to appeal the conviction.
โOne matter of a few seconds has changed a lot of lives in this case,โ Bonsib said in court, according to the Maryland Gazette. โSpending 10 years in jail is not going to bring anybody back.โ
Garnerโs father, Lawrence Garner Sr., spoke about his son shortly before the sentence was announced.
โThe impact of losing my son, Jr., my namesake, my best friend, my everything, is the toughest thing Iโve ever had to deal with in my life,โ he said. โHe was a very humble, sweet, caring, strong young man who made me proud to say that he was my son.โ
