The Atlanta Hawks weren’t the only team to steal an upset victory on the road this weekend. The No. 8 seed Memphis Grizzles pulled off an even bigger shocker, edging the No. 1 seed San Antonio Spurs, 101-98, on April 17 in Game 1 of a Western Conference Playoffs first round best-of-seven series.

San Antonio (61-21) leaned on its veteran leaders center Tim Duncan and guard Tony Parker for most of its offensive production. Parker led them with 20 points while Duncan added 16 points with 13 rebounds.

But Memphis kept the score tight all game, battling back with a strong inside offensive attack by its post players. Veteran power forward Zack Randolph led the Grizzles with a double-double of 25 points and 14 rebounds, while center Marc Gasol followed with 24 points and nine rebounds.

Memphis starting point guard Mike Conley added his own double-double of 15 points and 10 assists, including a key dish to former Duke star Shane Battier for a clutch three-pointer by the forward that put the Grizzlies up in the final seconds of the game.

Game 2 will be played in San Antonio on Wednesday, April 20 at 8: 30 p.m.
