Howard University’s softball team finished its season with a dominating win over Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference for University of Maryland Eastern Shore on May 8.
It was one of their finest batting performances of the season, smashing in 15 runs to the Lady Hawks’ five runs.
Junior Samantha Gatson earned the win as the leading pitcher for Howard; she gave up six hits in the game. But the Lady Bison didn’t need great pitching in the season finale, as junior centerfield Marissa Coats found her batting stroke, posting a perfect 3-for-3 at bat for three runs and six runs-batted-in (RBI). She passed the “hot bat” to Christine Sborz who smacked a two-run double at the top of the second round that led to a 7-0 cushion lead that Howard never relinquished.
Howard finished the regular season with a 16-26 overall record, 8-7 against the MEAC, and will take on Bethune-Cookman in the MEAC Softball Championship scheduled May 12-14 at the Ormond Beach (Florida) Sports Complex in Ormond Beach, Fla.
