The Howard University women’s tennis (9-5 overall record) fell just short of its goal of being champions as the Lady Bison fell to South Carolina State, 4-1, in the 2012 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Women’s Tennis Championship title on April 15 at Millbrook Tennis Center in Raleigh, N.C. Howard’s loss gave S.C. State its eighth consecutive MEAC title, ninth in school history.

The Lady Bison played well in the doubles events, splitting games with South Carolina State by winning game one, 8-6, before S.C.S.U. bounced back to win game two, 8-2.

Howard’s Brooke Hawthorne and Michelle Brown teamed up for the doubles win.

But HU wouldn’t win another event throughout the championship as South Carolina State swept through the singles events, including a huge singles win by MEAC Player of the Year Suhaila Jad over Howard’s Katelyn Stokes in the No. 1 event.

South Carolina State finished its season with a 19-0 overall record and received the conference’s automatic qualification to the NCAA Division I Women’s Championship. According to Howard Sports Information, the Division I Women’s Tennis Selection Show will air Tuesday, May 1 at 5 p.m. on NCAA.com.
