The Howard University swimming team fell just short of earning back-to-back victories over the weekend as it beat Catholic University on Dec. 2, but fell to American University the following day. This marked the second time this season that Howard has faced American; the two D.C.-based schools faced off in an exhibition meet to start the season on Sept. 30, but this time around, the contest counted against their win-loss record. Unfortunately, the Bison swimmers couldn’t hold off American, as the men’s team defeated Howard, 137-65, while the women’s team fell, 117-75.

But despite the team loss, Howard had some stellar relay performances. According to Howard Media Relations, freshmen Caleah Gregoire and Shaianne Johnson combined with sophomore Nandi Ross and senior Lauren Anthony to each earn their first victories of the season with a time of 2:14.06 in the women’s 200-meter medley relay.

Howard’s women 200-meter freestyle relay team of freshman Briana Dillon, sophomores Ashley Douglas and Janai Ederaine and junior E’lan Brewer also posted a winning time of 1:42.89.

Dillon also recorded her sixth individual victory of the season with a first place time of 1:01.01 in the 100-meter backstroke. Her first place time matched her fastest finish of the year and also stands as the third fastest 100-meter backstroke time in Lady Bison history.

On the men’s side, three swimmers had individual success. Junior Zadok Isaacs took first place in the 50-meter freestyle with a time of 22.30. Freshman Miles Hector won the 1000-meter freestyle with a time of 10:14.47, marking the fourth time this season he has won first place in the event. Fellow freshman Dexter Brown claimed first place in the 100-meter breaststroke (1:01.46).

Howard’s swimming team won’t return to the water until New Year’s Day 2012 when they head to Fort Myers, Fla. to take on the North Dakota Fighting Sioux.
