Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser recently announced that she will not seek reelection after 10 years in office.
In a Nov. 25 letter to Washingtonians, Bowser noted the big achievements that have taken place during her tenure.ย
โWe drove unemployment to its lowest levels, achieved AAA bond rating and strong reserves, quadrupled CBE spending and completed the largest infrastructure project in our cityโs history with the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge,โ said Bowser, in part of her letter. โThroughout this remarkable journey, Iโve been honored to serve with countless dedicated city executives and extraordinary front-line workers, the incredible people who keep Washington, D.C. thriving every day.โย
Bowser concluded, saying that while her time in office will officially end on Jan. 2, 2027, she will โkeep winning for D.C.โ
Now, Janeese Lewis George (D-Ward 4) has announced that she wants to lead the nationโs capital after Mayor Bowser exits. In a video posted to social media, Lewis George elaborated on her upbringing in D.C. and her family ties to the city. She also spoke on her time as assistant attorney general in the District, and her experience representing the 4th Ward since 2021.
In Lewis Georgeโs video, she said decided to run for the mayoral seat when she became โtired of watching politicians make plans that left the rest of us out.โ
โD.C. is worth fighting for,โ she continues.ย
Though the video is critical of those who have been in charge of Washington, D.C., in a letter responding to Mayor Bowserโs announcement, Lewis George said โD.C. is a place that honors and celebrates its leaders. We will always be grateful for Mayor Bowserโs devoted public service and impactful leadership.โย
Other individuals who have filed to be a candidate in the D.C. mayoral race are: Adrian Byrd, Robert Gross, Rhonda Hamilton, DaโMoni Ivey, Regan Jones, James McMorris and Jeffrey Wincott.
