On Feb. 21, 2026, the Kappa Alpha Psi Foundation of Metropolitan Baltimore (KAPFMB) hosted its seventh Annual Black History Month Prayer Breakfast (BHMPB) at the 5-Star Family Life Center on the campus of Morning Star Baptist Church in Gywnn Oak, Md.
The Black History Month Prayer Breakfast franchise was started under the leadership of Past KAPFMB President Nathan Fletcher, DDS and was designed to focus on uniting communities through faith, honoring the contributions and resilience of African Americans, and fostering reflection on justice and equality. The general public gathers for fellowship, prayer and spiritual encouragement, while breaking bread to foster a more cohesive community.
This year’s distinguished speaker was the Rev. Dr. Howard-John Wesley, senior pastor of the historic Alfred Street Baptist Church in Arlington, Va., where he serves as only the eighth pastor in the church’s more than 200-year-old history. Wesley is a nationally recognized voice for justice, compassion and grace. His influence has been recognized across industries and organizations to include but not limited to The Root 100, UNCF, the Rainbow-PUSH Coalition and the NAACP, which honored him with the Chairman’s Award for his work in social justice at the 47th Annual NAACP Image Awards.

Wesley gave a resounding speech which matched the Black History Month Prayer Breakfast theme of “Reinventing Hope for a New Generation.” In his remarks “Ignorance has a generational impact” and “don’t ignore the price of your privilege.” The message was greatly received and garnered standing ovations from the packed room.
Charles Flemming III called the event to order and introduced the master of ceremonies, Rev. Kevin Slayton of the Northwest Appold United Methodist Church in Baltimore, Md.; Bishop Dwayne C. Debnam, senior pastor of the Morning Star Baptist Church of Baltimore County provided the welcome and invocation; Donald Malcolm Smith provided the occasion; Ms. Tabitha Brooks, the inspirational psalmist, delivered several amazing renditions of gospel favorites, accompanied by Tayvon Booze (keyboardist).
The Baltimore (MD) Alumni Chapter Kappa Leaguers recited Black History poems by noted African American authors. Watching the youth performance was another highlight of the BHMPB. Dr. Justin Hunt introduced our distinguished speaker and Joshua Crockett delivered the special presentation. The event closed with felicitations from the chairman of the event, Howard Tutman III and remarks were provided by Brandon Wylie of Wylie Funeral Homes (platinum sponsor; Baltimore (MD) Alumni Chapter Polemarch Dr. Devron Dickens Sr. and Theodore R. Garrett Jr., president of the KAPFMB.
There were more than 180 attendees.
