BadGal Robin “Rihanna” Fenty made big moves this September, launching Fenty Beauty at the Sephora in Times Square during New York Fashion Week.
A native of Barbados, the Grammy award-winning singer, songwriter and actress is also a designer, style icon and beauty mogul. Rihanna, a 2016 Black Girls Rock Rockstar Award-winner, is one of the best-selling artists of all time. Thirty-one of her songs have been top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, 14 of which have reached No. 1. Rihanna has sold more than 230 million albums and is worth $75 million, according to Forbes magazine.
In just one month of operation, Fenty Beauty recorded $72 million in earned media value, beating out long-established labels like NYX, Benefit and Urban Decay according to WWD.com, the global fashion authority and “the Bible of Fashion.”
RiRi, as she is affectionately called by #Rihanna Navy fans, created Fenty Beauty because of her perpetual choice of fearless self-expression. The line features PRO FILT’R Soft Matte Longwear Foundation, PRO FILT’R Instant Retouch Primer, MatchStix Skinsticks, Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter, Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer, Invisimatte Blotting products, brushes and a makeup sponge.
The PRO FILT’R’s foundation aims to match skin tones for every sistah on the block, regardless of color. The foundation boasts a formula for all skin types in 40 shades for hard-to-match skin tones, offering everyone “killer radiance” and “killawatt shine” just like Rihanna’s cover magazine glam.
PRO FILT’R foundation can build medium to full coverage, with a formulate photo filter. Fenty Beauty promises the foundation will instantly smooth, diffuse pores, mattify and cover skin evenly. The foundation is high tech and oil-free, formulated to resist sweat and humidity without clogging pores.
Rihanna wore PRO FILT’R foundation shade 340, along with Invisimatte, Killawatt and Gloss Bomb after a Fenty x Puma 2016 fashion show. I tried shades 370 and 400, and loved that my makeup look lasted all day. My skin felt silky smooth and looked natural, not like I was “made up.”
Fenty Beauty products are priced between $20 and $39, moderate in comparison to some luxury lines. The beauty collection is available online in 150 countries, and in Sephora across the United States. Fenty Beauty is also in line with the animal rights movement and is reported to be 100 percent cruelty-free. And why not: Rihanna can afford it. The Kendo division of LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton partnered with her to the tune of a $10 million collaboration.
Rihanna is no stranger to entrepreneurship, and is taking the fashion and beauty world by storm. The fentybeauty.com website encourages visitors to “feel free to take chances, and take risks, and dare to do something new or different.”
Since 2010, Rihanna has sold 10 fragrances including Reb’l Fleur, RiRi and the Good Girl Gone Bad by Kilian at retailers such as Macy’s, Nordstrom and Bergdorf Goodman.
In 2016, she was the first Black woman to represent Dior, designing her own Star Trek-inspired shades for the French fashion house. Also in 2016, she boosted Puma’s sales with her Fenty x Puma sneakers release. According to Time.com, the sneakers sold out in 35 minutes, averaging $140 per pair.
Rihanna’s designer collaborations have gone viral globally, and celebs such as Jennifer “JLo” Lopez and Drake sport Rihanna’s gear. In a recent Instagram post, Drake showed Rihanna’s Fenty x Stance sockwear. A year ago, Rihanna gifted JLo with denim thigh-high boots, a Rihanna x Manolo luxury collaboration. JLo strutted the boots in her music video, “Ain’t Your Mama.”
The Fenty Beauty launch was a show-stopper, but topping it is the exclusive Galaxy Holiday Collection, her latest Fenty Beauty capsule. This limited edition ranges from $19 to $59. Imagine Starlit Hyper-Glitz Lipstick in poppin’ shades like “$upanova” or “Sci-Fly.”
“Glitter on glitter on glitter.” Rihanna said on Sephora.com, “that’s what The Galaxy Collection is all about, no exception.”
