Emotions were high as the Howard University Lady Bison (5-20, 4-4 against Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) celebrated their seniors Tosin Elebute, Taylor Johnson, and Gabrielle Martin preparing to take on the Delaware State Hornets (3-18, 2-6   MEAC) for the season’s last home match.

“The Lady Bison played very, very well this afternoon; it was a great last home win for the seniors and their families,” commented head coach Dawn Barnes. “Tosin, Taylor, and Gabi came up big for us whether it was blocking, attacking, or serving; great win.”

Howard was up and running, but Del. State came ready to play, winning the first set 29-31. Both teams played point for point, but the Hornets capitalized on HU’s inconsistent play.

Coming into the second set, Howard turned on their switch and crushed the Hornets 25-19 and 25-8 in the third set. The energy was high, and the crowd was intense. The beaming sun was no match for the Lady Bison as they managed to finish out the fourth set 28-26; playing down to the wire.

Del. State put up some solid blocks against Howard out blocking the Bison 7.5-11.

Tosin Elebute had a match high of 24 kills and 15 digs – leaving her mark at home with a double-double. Taylor Johnson put down 12 balls for the team and had two major solo blocks, followed by Gabrielle Martin with nine kills. Stephanie Shultis finished with eight kills, 23 assists, and five digs. Jasmine King dished out 24 assists for the team.

Defensively, Riana Cain picked up 11 digs, followed by freshman Alexis Skinner with seven.

For the Hornets, Laisha Davis had 11 kills followed by Jes Russell-Croucher with eight kills and 16 digs. Christobel Fakaosi finished with 11 digs, and Sonya Inderbitzin chipped in with 10.

The Lady Bison will take to the road to face MEAC foe Norfolk St. on Nov. 4 beginning at 6 p.m.
