The most celebrated holiday other than Valentine’s Day is Mother’s Day.
But sometimes, life happens, and we find ourselves scrounging for last-minute gifts and activities for our cherished moms.
We’ve found some places in Washington DC and the surrounding areas to consider if you are still searching for the perfect gift, and want to keep your dollars circulating within the Black Community.
Flowers of course. Every mom loves flowers. And you can let her know that you are thinking about her in connection with the generations when you make that last minute stop at Lee’s Flower Shop – a staple in Washington, DC for 77 years.
Sitting on the historic U street where black businesses once thrived, Lee’s was founded by William and Winifred Lee in 1945.
In its fourth generation of family owners, “Lee’s has survived the riots, the drug war, the building of the metro, and most recently the pandemic,” Stacie Lee said.
For customer convenience, orders can be placed online, over the phone, or at one of their two locations. 1026 U Street NW Ave NE or the newest shop at Union Station, 50 Massachusetts Ave.
But time is of the essence; the last day to order is Saturday, May 7th.
OK, you’ve got the flowers, now what about dinner? Looking for a place to take mom to eat? Want to bring back those memories of the home made food she made – but of course you don’t want her to lift a single plate.
Johnny Rays is your destination. Nestled in Sterling, Virginia, since 2011, Johnny Rays Sultry Soul food boasts a 4.6 out of 5.0 in google reviews.
Their menu includes southern favorites such as fried fish and chicken, sweet potato pie, and peach cobbler. And let’s not forget the macaroni and cheese.
Mother’s day is first come, first serve for this dining gem, but if you miss the opportunity to dine in, take-out is just as delicious.
Visit Johnny Ray’s Sultry Soul Food at 101 Executive Drive Suite A Sterling, VA 20166 or call and place your order at 571-233-0558.
Then in the evening, every Mom wants to wind down. You are in last minute luck.
Mareca Williams opened The Yelõ Candle Company in 2021, creating fragrant candles for the home.
The candles are made from high-quality fragrances and soy wax and are made in Maryland.
Only for Mother’s day, Yelõ is offering their limited “Someone Special” candle for $18, and their brand new reed diffusers for $20. The perfect gift for mom all under $40.
The online store offers candles, linen and room sprays, and other specialties and for Mother’s Day all orders are shipped the next day.
Last but not least, last minute “gift” your mom with some peace!
You still have time to surprise her with a gift certificate from At Eaze Massage, 5801 Fishers Ln. Suite 108, Rockville, MD.
“At Eaze Massage’s goal is to provide wellness to live a stress-free life,” owner Sula Washington said.
The center offers three kinds of massages: therapeutic, deep tissue, sports, and more.
The gift certificates can be purchased on the website or in person at the spa.
Happy Mother’s Day and congratulations – you put together an amazing last minute occasion for that one and only special woman called “Mom”!
