Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown and Karmen Bailey Walker became man and wife on May 27, taking each other’s hand in marriage at a ceremony in College Park, Md. Walker and Brown became one in the presence of roughly 370 friends, family, and local and state officials who gathered on the campus of University of Maryland inside Memorial Chapel for the grand event. “Karmen and I want to thank our family and friends for sharing in our special day. It truly was everything we had hoped it would be,” Brown told the AFRO. “We are so grateful for everyone’s love and support and so very happy to be starting our lives together.”
The couple had long been acquainted with each other, as they often crossed paths at different community events, but things changed in 2009, when Brown, 50, and Walker, 52, had another chance meeting. It was then that Brown boldly told Walker to expect a call asking her on a date, and two weeks later, she got one. Fast forward two years later and now the two are blending families and gearing up for a move to Prince George’s County, while also counting down the days to their honeymoon in Spain, which was postponed to the summer until the school year is over.
Self-described as “very, very easygoing,” Walker’s gracious smile and personality are valuable tools for any lady to have, especially when standing side by side with a leading state politician. Walker is a Maryland native and graduated from Fort Washington’s Friendly High School before earning her bachelor’s degree from University of Florida and a master’s from Syracuse University. Both Brown and Walker have 12-year-old sons who attend Catholic school together, as well as a daughter and stepdaughter, respectively, from previous marriages.
