The Prince George’s County Council ratified a plan on Sept 23 for a state agency headquarters to be built at Carrollton Station, paving the way for a state agency to be sited in the county for the first time.
The Carrollton Station will include the new Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development. It is located on the north side of Harkins Road and less than a half-mile from the New Carrollton Metro-MARC Train Stations.
The plan, approved by the Prince George’s County Planning Board on Sept. 19, is projected to bring 200,000 square feet of office and retail space, and 556 multi-family units to the site.
“Adding office jobs, housing, and retail will create a more active environment with more pedestrians and amenities in the New Carrollton Metro station area,” Council Member Eric Olson (D – District 3 ) said in a press release. “The development meets the community’s plan and vision and we were, therefore, able to move it through the approval process quickly. This is a great day for Prince George’s County.”
The New Carrollton Transit District Development Plan and Transit District Overlay Zoning Map Amendment, enacted by the County Council in May 2010, is projected to bring development of more than six million square feet of new commercial office and retail space and 5,500 new residential units to the New Carrollton area over time.
“Successful transit-oriented development is critical to sustaining the types of opportunities that increase the County’s economic competitiveness,” Council Chair Andrea Harrison (D – District 5) said in a press release, noting that the Carrollton Station Plan, including the new Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development, will bring jobs, housing and retail to the area – all within walking distance of the New Carrollton Metro. “This is a win-win for Prince George’s County and we are pleased for the enthusiasm as this project progresses.”
