Comptroller to Present Montgomery Co. WDS Award, Proclamations; Attend Business Roundtable
WHO: Comptroller Peter Franchot
WHAT: Comptroller Franchot will spend a day in Montgomery County starting with presenting aWilliam Donald Schaefer Helping People Award to the Warrior Canine Connection, an organization that enlists recovering service members in a therapeutic mission to train service dogs for fellow veterans. The Comptroller created the award to honor the legacy of public service exemplified by the former Governor, Comptroller and Baltimore City Mayor. One winner is selected in each of Maryland’s 24 jurisdictions.
The Comptroller then will visit Madison House, where he will present a proclamation to owners Duane and Sandy Heiler for their help in planning Brookeville’s War of 1812 Bicentennial. During the British occupation and burning of Washington, President James Madison sought refuge in Caleb and Henrietta Bentley’s Brookeville home (now known as the Madison House). Built in 1798, the house became “Capital for a Day” during the invasion. The Heilers bought the house in 2007 and spent two years restoring the home.
At mid-day, Comptroller Franchot will present a proclamation to owners Andy and Jackie Leach and Eric Cheadle of GrillMarx Steakhouse and Raw Bar to recognize the restaurant for its fine cuisine, success and dedication to the community. While there, the Comptroller will join members the Olney Chamber of Commerce in a business roundtable discussion on the state’s economy and fiscal climate. There will be a question and answer segment.
The Comptroller will make an early afternoon visit to the Laytonsville Volunteer Fire Department to present a proclamation to Chief Buddy Sutton recognizing the department’s longtime service to the community. Following the example set by his predecessor, Comptroller Louis L. Goldstein who helped to dedicate a new fire station in 1966 after the old one burned down, Comptroller Franchot will present the fire department with a Maryland State Flag to display as part of the department’s major renovation project.
